Tilt-A-Whirl

Last night I realized something. Usually when I have a bad session, it’s related to going on tilt for a bit. I know I shouldn’t do it and I always try to prevent it, but sometimes I just don’t see it coming until after I’ve lost everything I sat down at the table with. Afterwards it’s easy to look back and say, “Nick, you dumbass! Don’t let it get to you when someone hits their hand on the river.”

Home Poker Articles

Over the next few weeks I’ll be writing a series of articles for Professional Poker Online. They’ll go over the aspects to setting up your own home poker game. I’m pretty excited about the opportunity. The first article, published today, gives some introductory information and then discusses choosing ring games or tournaments for your home game.

Poker Super Power

A few weeks ago Jackpot Jay wrote a column asking which poker super power you’d rather have.

(1) knowing your opponents’ cards, or (2) knowing which community cards were going to show up.
ESPN

It’s an interesting question. As many people wrote in response to his article, I think it all depends on the situation at hand. If I had to pick one or the other though, I’d have to go with knowing which community cards were going to show up. If you know which cards will come on the flop, turn, and river, you can decide pre-flop whether to play the hand or not. Pre-flop is probably the area where most people tend to leak in their game.

On the other hand though, if you knew your opponents’ cards, you could eventually tell their hand after you saw the community cards come up. In this situation, you’d be able to make easier decisions for the rest of the hand.

Can I have both super powers?

Tilt

On January 13th, ESPN will launch their latest drama, Tilt.

“Tilt” will take place in Las Vegas in the days leading up to a major poker tournament. The viewer will get an inside look at this sometimes glamorous and sometimes dangerous world through the eyes of the players. In addition to the competition in cards, the central characters will battle for control, money and fame.

Outdrawn

During a series of 6 hands tonight I was a pre-flop raiser in 5 of them. I lost all 5 hands, 4 of them to inside straight draws. I did play the hands well though, only going to showdown on 2 of them because I knew I was beat. Here were my cards for the stretch:
J♦J♣
A♣K♥
J♥J♣
K♣K♥
A♣K♥

Talk about a rough session!

Party Poker and Poker Tracker

With my recent switch to Party Poker, I decided to give Poker Tracker a try. Let me tell you…it’s one fine piece of software for the online poker player. The program allows you to import your hand histories from a number of online poker sites. It stores everything in a database and gives you so many statistics about how you play it’ll blow your mind. In the next few days I’ll be making the $55 purchase to register the software. I get to import 1000 hands to try it out, but that won’t last long.

Earlier in the week I made the switch to Party Poker because I’ve heard such great things about the games there. I’ve been reading Small Stakes Hold ‘em: Winning Big With Expert Play and Party Poker has all the fish, so I figured it would be a good site to work on my poker game. So far in three sessions of play I’m averaging 20 BB/hr, so there definitely is money to be made. I know that rate won’t last long, but it sure feels good now!

For other beginners out there trying Poker Tracker, I found a page explaining how to track your progress.

Using Card Converter

This site takes advantage of my Card Converter Plugin for WordPress. What this allows you to do is type <card>Ah</card> in the comment box and A♥ will be displayed. This works for every playing card abbreviation, plus a few extras. You can also use the quicktag buttons just above the comment box so that you don’t have to type out everything by hand. For more instructions and a full set of features, visit the link above.

Poker Chip Tricks

In case this is the first time you’ve visited one of my sites, make sure to check out Poker Chip Tricks, which is my site dedicated to tutorials on doing the nifty little tricks.
