All In Stealing Content

Posted on March 17, 2006

The web site for All In Mag is republishing feeds of the top 200 poker blogs…without permission. I’m not linking to their site here but it’s not hard to find. Look them up and check out the Blogs section. No original content of their own. Another site called Blogs on Poker (put those 3 words together for the domain) is publishing over 200 poker blog feeds as well. There’s a crook around every corner…

Looks like blogsonpoker has been taken over by some random german site.

I’m not sure I agree with you on this Nick. Regarding AllIn, they are listing the top 200 blogs and offering a snapshot of the latest post. They fully disclose who wrote the post and they link directly to the blog that wrote the post. In fact, the only way to read the post in full is to click the link to the persons blog which helps drive traffic to their blog. Seems like this type of feed is good for poker bloggers.

Not being able to see blogsonpoker, I don’t want to say the exact same thing, but I seem to recall they were similar. They disclosed who actually wrote it and made sure there was a link to the actual post. You also couldn’t read the full post without going to the writers actual blog. Again, not sure since I can’t see their website right now, but that is what I seem to recall.

Where I have a problem is when sites take the information and use it as if they wrote it. I’ve found numerous times where my content was being used without a link to my site and without even a mention of my blog. That is not good and is where I would agree with you on the stealing/crook.

When someone steals an entire post and pawns it off as their own then they are stealing.

I don’t know…maybe i’m naive, but I see a big difference in what All In is doing vs. was some of the other shill sites are doing…

I agree…there is a big difference between the two that you mention. I guess my main point should have been that neither site had asked for my permission to post my RSS feed like that. Even though there is a difference, both uses are still wrong when they don’t get permission.

I agree with Tripjax. Why do you care? If its driving traffic to your blog I would think you’d be excited about it. Isn’t that the point of making your RSS feed available to the public?

I care because they are making money off my content and it’s helping them get search engine traffic and rankings without writing anything of their own. I could care less about the 5 visitors a day I get from these sites. The point of making your RSS feed free is so that readers can easily see (with feed readers) when you’ve posted something new without having to check your site several times a day. I have 85 feeds that I track…I wouldn’t read nearly that much if I had to visits those 85 sites all the time just to see if they’ve posted something new.

Its helping them get search engine traffic and rankings from 2 sentences of a blog? I highly doubt it. Basically what they’ve done is create a web-based RSS reader for poker fans. I think its a cool feature. If I’m at work and I don’t have access to my RSS reader at home, I can pop in and check out the latest blog updates. It works for me…

Then you don’t know how SEO works. They’re pulling in a lot of random poker content there, which should work quite well for the search engines. Trust me…they aren’t trying to provide you a friendly service. It’s all for their own good.

As to you point of not having your RSS Reader at home..this is why there are online RSS reading services like bloglines, so you can access your feeds from anywhere.

I’ve followed many poker blogs you’ll find that I’m not the only one who feels this way. We’re continually finding people who are republishing our content without permission.

    Nick,

I understand your concern. I’m sure you spend a good amount of time creating your content. Why not just send them an email and ask to be removed from the list?

On a sidenote, I know you probably don’t want to hear this but I discovered your blog through the ALL IN website. I’m a subscriber and I was clicking around the site and found a few good blogs I would never have known about that I now read regularly. If anything, being on that list is attracting new readers that otherwise wouldn’t even know you exist.

Getting off topic, great work with the blog, its one that I read regularly since I found it.

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions Dan. I had emailed them and the other site before writing this post with a very short email asking to remove my content.

Wow…I’m glad this is being discussed so I can understand all the aspects…

I don’t think of the things Nick brings up so it is good to hear both sides…
