Poker Podcasts

On my rides to and from work each day I’ve been listening to poker podcasts. Listening to poker discussions keep my mind off the traffic. In the mornings the poker talk gets my mind thinking and after work it helps to relax me after a long day.

My favorite poker podcast without a doubt is Card Club on Lord Admiral Radio. Cincinnati Sean, Brent Stacks, and everyone else who contribute to the show to an excellent job. Congrats on your 1 year anniversary guys!

Another poker podcast I started listening to is Rounders. It’s actually a poker radio show that they turn into a podcast. The radio station is Team 1040 AM out of Vancouver, Canada. My favorite part of the show has been the interviews with some of the top names from the poker world.

What do you know…my two favorite poker podcasts are both from Canada…eh! As a lifetime Michiganer I’m glad to finally find something good to come from our friends across the lake. ;-)

Another popular poker podcast is Poker Diagram by Henry and Zog. It comes all the way from London. Each week they play some kind of online poker and discuss their play and other things poker. I listened to a couple of episodes and it was put together well.

I’m sure there are many other podcasts out there related to poker. Do you have some I didn’t mention? Leave a comment because I’d love to check them out.

Taking a Break

Lately I have been taking a break from all types of poker, online, casino, everything. The only poker in my life as of now is the WSOP on ESPN. Even though I already know what happens and who makes it how far, I still need to watch and enjoy the plays being made. I’m sure poker will be coming back into my life very soon, but for now, there isn’t much going on.

Poker Stars Deep Stack Tournaments

No matter how tempted you might be to join one of these…DON’T DO IT!!

I made the first mistake and didn’t realize it was a limit tournament. Talk about dragging out online poker play. I just busted in 48th place out of 664 after 7 hours of play! Seven fucking hours! It was $20+2 to enter and I was paid $33.20. A whole fucking $11.20 for 7 fucking hours! It was not even close to being fun.

Don’t touch these tournaments with a 10 foot pole. Warn your friends, family, and neighbors.

On the bright side I made another cash finish in a big field tournament.

Owned

I got owned by Drizz in the first round of HUC2. In the best of three match I actually took the first game before the blinds went up. This while playing another heads-up that I got into by mistake. I slow played aces in the final hand and took down his top pair.

The next two games didn’t go so hot. I was outplayed pretty much the whole way. I got down early and I don’t play well heads-up when I’m behind. Definitely a weakness of mine. Give me a lead and I’ll push chips around like their coming out of my ass, but put me in a come from behind position and I get scared of everything. Note to self for next time I play HU: stay aggressive.

No Recap Coming

I’ve decided against doing a recap of the 2nd place finish because it’s already been 3 days. Recaps need to be typed up soon afterwards because the excitement and my memory is gone.

I remember making 3 mistakes throughout the tournament. The first I can’t remember for the life of me. The second mistake was an attemped blind steal when we were down to about 20 players. I had A6o on the button and ran into AK in the big blind. The board double paired and we split the pot otherwise I was gone. Phew! The third mistake was the costly one. We were playing heads up for a good half hour. Back and forth went the chip lead with solid play from both sides. He raised from the small blind and I decided I was going to push with my A2o. I hadn’t come over the top of him in quite some time pre-flop and I acted too quickly. He called with pocket sevens and I didn’t get any help from the board. Game over.

In Focus

I just finished browsing through some of my Poker Tracker stats for cash games and tournaments. It was an eye opener to say the least. What I had previously thought were my strengths are actually my weaknesses and vice versa. Once I can go through the data a bit more I’m going to write up a summary complete with a discussion and my plans for taking advantage of my findings.

I also owe a post about the tournaments I played over the weekend, including the largest cash of my poker journey. My tournament play from the weekend is actually what spurred me to check out my stats and data. Part of me is still in shock at what I found, but part of me knew it all along. I guess I’ve been hiding from myself.

It also looks like I will finally be part of a regular home game that a friend is starting up. I definitely need more live play.

It Feels Good…

…to get a nice cash in a big tournament. This is my biggest cash so far. It’s 6 in the morning and I’m whooped, so I’ll try to do a proper write up tomorrow at some point.

2nd Place Finish

Blogger Heads Up

I’ll be playing HU2 with a bunch of other poker bloggers. I’ve had good success when I’ve played heads up matches on a few different sites, so I’m looking forward to testing my HU game against better opponents.

Harrah and AOL Partnership

Harrah’s Entertainment is teaming up with AOL to offer a free poker room to AOL members.

32 Cents

$5 + $1 NL Hold’em speed tournament on Party Poker.
1580 people entered the tournament.
I lasted 50 minutes and only saw 9 flops.
Finished in 150th place for a payout of $6.32 and a whopping $0.32 profit.

That’s how you build a bankroll!
